Dark Trail to Dodge (Walker Western)
Published in Hardcover by Walker & Co (May, 1997)
Author: Cotton Smith
Average review score:

A bang-up job!
For your first time published, I'm no literary critic, but you can have my vote for a bang-up job.

It was an interesting story line and it kept my interest up, good character development. I felt that I would know Tyrel, John, Tug, Mitchell, Jackson and all the rest of the characters.

If Cotton Smith has written other Westerns of this quality, I would like to read them, short or long stories. Also, is he planning to continue writing more Western novels? I certainly hope so. I'm looking forward to it. It would be interesting to have some of the characters of "Dark Trail to Dodge" in the next story.

What a great book!
After reading all the great reviews on Dark Trail to Dodge, how could I not read it? It was great from page one. I'm a huge fan of Kirby Jonas books, and he'll always be my favorite--better than Louis L'Amour. But Cotton Smith is not far behind. With Cotton Smith and Kirby Jonas and maybe Elmer Kelton, you really don't need anyone else! If you like this book, try Legend of the Tumbleweed, by Kirby Jonas.

Classic cowboy tale, full of horses, guns and bad guys.
Dark Trail to Dodge is full of everything that makes a western great -- horses, guns, good guys, bad guys and more horses. The story would make a good screenplay, harkening back to classic movies like Winchester '73 and Man From Laramie. In the characters of John Checker, Tyrel Bannon and Dan Mitchell, author Smith brings to life the hardship and kinship of life on a cattle drive. After reading this book, anyone who has ever dreamt of "riding the range," will long to saddle up and ride the Dark Trail to Dodge. I hope we don't have to wait long for more works from Cotton Smith.

The Pursuit of Holiness (Walker Large Print)
Published in Paperback by Walker and Co. (January, 1986)
Author: Jerry Bridges
Average review score:

One of the best Christian books on holiness I've read.
Jerry Bridges shows us in this great book how Christians must depend on God's grace at all times and yet also striving with perseverance to pursuit holiness. We will never be perfectly holy in our present life, nevertheless it is God's will that we must always pursue such holiness so that we may be increasingly changed into His Son's image more and more everyday. This book will greatly humble and challenge every Christian to stop flirting with sin (however small it may be), and to start living a life that is pleasing to the holy God whom we worship and adore.

Excellent training for any Christian
This biblically founded book is one of the greatest motivating books I have ever read. Jerry Bridges, through illumination from God, reveals what holiness is... and what that means to a Christian life. The book opposes legalism, and simply guides the reader on how to pursue God's Will in their lives. The book has helped me become more fearful, and yet, thankful towards God, but most of all loving Him for saving us and giving us the stregth and desire to please Him by leading a holy life. I plan on buying another book by Jerry Bridges entitled the Practice of Godliness. I have heard it is as motivating, life -affirming, and Sprirt-driven as this one.

What Are God's Role & Our Role in Our Pursuit of Holiness?
Someone has well said that nature forms us, sin deforms us, penitentiary reforms us, education informs us, the world conforms us, but only Jesus transforms us. But how does Jesus transform us to be holy and more like Him? Do we simply "let go and let God"? What should we rely on God to do? And what are our responsibilities in this pursuit of holiness? These are questions addressed by this book.

This book is helpful for every Christian desiring to be Christ-like. Many are complacent with merely entering heaven if they died. Of course, we're not saved by what we do but by the perfect righteousness of Christ imputed (credited) to us by faith. But pursuit of holiness is not an option for Christians because saving faith creates within them the desire to be Christ-like and holy.

Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32) By knowing the truth of who we are in Christ, of His supernatural power available to us to overcome temptation and sin, and of the victory we have in Christ over the bondage of sin (Rom. 8:2), we're then able to *claim* this truth and be free--no longer slaves to sin (Rom. 6:17-18). This book helps me in that it teaches the Biblical truth of who we are in Christ, what we should rely upon *God* to do, and what we should accept as *our* responsibilities in our pursuit of holiness. It also shows us the nature and tactics of the enemy, how to express our dependence on the Holy Spirit (i.e. through Scripture memorization), practical scriptural principles for personal disciplines, how to put sin to death, among other things. It's a life-changing book. (A sequel to this book which is also good is "The Practice of Godliness").

Brennan's of Houston in Your Kitchen
What a wonderful collection of delicious recipes. Chef Walker has shared his magical culinary secrets and has delivered them in a beautifully illustrated and well written book. "In Your Kitchen" tells us how to prepare some of Brennan's famous treats such as: Brandy Milk Punch, Turtle Soup and Bananas Foster. Carl Walker also shares his life experiences with his readers. After reading through the book, I feel that I know Chef Walker and his family personally. NOTE: The Texas Cornbread Pudding will become a must for your family gatherings.

An approachable guide to delicious food
Brennan's of Houston in Your Kitchen is as approachable as Chef Carl Walker himself. This cookbook guides the reader through the best Creole recipes from the restaurant in a straightforward, informative manner. Recipes are not overly simplified for the home cook, but instead are presented in an enticing and easy to follow step by step process, with lovely pictures of the final products. Each dish we have prepared tastes exactly like the food available at the restaurant. We recently visited Brennan's of Houston and were again pleased with how well the recipes translated for the home cook. What a delightful addition to any "chef's" library.

Brennan's of Houston In Your Kitchen
This book is so well balanced with recipes, photos, history of the place and it feels like you know the author when you read it. I've tried some of the recipes and they are user friendly, which isn't always the case for a chef written book. I've given this book to my friends for Christmas and they have loved it. The photos are exceptional and they are not intimating to me, like so many other books. If you want a touch of Creole and some just good cookbook reading it is my new favorite.
ps. I forgot almost every recipe has Chef tips and notes so you can substitute ingredients that may be hard to find and make your own creation.

Something to Celebrate

Authors: Felicia Mason, Margie Walker, and Brenda Jackson

I LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT
I am not a big romance reader, but this Holiday novella was the bomb. I read it three time this weekend. I just couldn't put it down. Brenda Jackson is a writer in a class all by herself. I just want to talk to her personally. I really really enjoyed all the stories, Ms Jackson just took my breath away. Ladies keep up the good work each story had a special highlight that truly deal with family, emotion, faith and issues of today.

Good Read
What can you say about Brenda Jackson. She is one of my favorite writers. The story about Trask and Felicia had be laughing, crying and applauding. This would have even been better if it was longer.

I purchase the book for Brenda's story, but I did like the other stories as well. They both touched on some sensitive issues.

Good job ladies.

Another Great Madaris Story
Brenda Jackson does it again with the continuous Madaris Family Saga. This is a well written story about cousin Felicia Madaris and her long time friendship with Trask Maxwell. You know how you have those kinds of friendships the boy-girl kind that you have had since childhood, picked on each other, just actually get on each others nerves but in reality as you get older you start having strange feelings for one another. Well this story by Brenda Jackson does just that with Felicia and Trask. It has humor, its heartwarming, it has that old Madaris family touch and it has another great ending. Brenda does it again and makes us all feel like we are apart of this family and somewhere you see somebody who you recognize either as a family member or a friend. So to all the old Brenda Jackson "Madaris Family" saga fans you should be able to read this in one day and enjoy it just like the others. To new fans, in order to really appreciate the Madaris Family and Friends you must start at the beginning, you won't regret being apart of this continuous saga. To my Florida Friend..Ms Jackson..Much continued success as you go into the next century!

The Great House of God: A Home for Your Heart (Walker Large Print Books)
Published in Paperback by Walker and Co. (January, 2001)
Author: Max Lucado
Average review score:

Any house is a great house
Max does a wonderful job of combining the house with the Lord's prayer. We are using this book as a small group bible study and everyone is getting something from it. Most chapters you leave feeling "on fire" and ready to tackle your house, but mostly is a truly new way of looking at the meaning of the Lord's prayer. Everyone who is in class says that they see the Lord's prayer in a new light now--believing now that God is truly their Father. Max, God is surely working through you and we hope to see more of your work!

ENLIGHTENING!!!
I could have finished this book a good while now, but it was a book that I enjoyed reading at a fairly slow pace. There is quite a lot to grasp and understand as Max Lucado walks us through The Lord's Prayer, and through the House of God starting at the living room, through to the kitchen, and finally the chapel.

This prayer which is said by millions all around the world every day, is sometimes said in ritual style with the deepness of it taken for granted, though not intentionally. But Mr. Lucado uses Our Lord's Prayer as a floor plan of the House of God, with a step by step description of how God meets our needs when we dwell in him, and how we can live our lives completely in God's favour as we obey this great Prayer.

As Christians with our sins forgiven which Jesus paid in full on the Cross, we must act accordingly as the prayer directs us. Not wanting to give too much away let me encourage you to read this book soon and cherish the lovely way it is written. It has truly blessed my heart and I know it will yours too. Mr. Lucado.....thank you once again for the wonderful revelations of this book. I pray that God will continue to bless you and your family, and of course your literary work.

Heather P. Marshall

WOW! Max is truly blessed with talent
Max Lucado goes in depth with The Lord's Prayer, taking an angle I have never seen before. He equates it to a home - God's home. A book that will give you goosebumps from cover to cover, and the motivation to search out God and make Him the # 1 priority in your life. Great for those whose walk with God has been put "on the bottom of the pile" in today's busy lifestyles. The Lord really uses Max in this one to convey some incredible messages. A MUST HAVE!

A Treasury of Knitting Patterns
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (October, 1981)
Author: Barbara G. Walker
Average review score:

One-stop knitting
This book is one of two you should own if you knit (the other being the Second Treasury). I own a number of knitting books, including Mary Phillips' and Elizabeth Zimmerman's, and Walker is quite simply the best one-stop source for clear, concise, and complete knitting information, stitch patterns, and inspiration. Walker covers basic knitting tips, simple stitches, cables, Aran designs, multi-color knitting, and lace patterns from simple to complex.

Any knitter (beginner or advanced) who has designing ambitions needs this book. I agree with the reader from Oceanside; this book (and Vols II and III) should never be allowed to go out of print.

ESSENTIAL knitting resource!
This book is an absolute treasure for the knitter. It is clearly written, well illustrated, contains interesting historical notes, and is easy to follow. The first sweater I made using some of these patterns won a blue ribbon! (I used the prize money towards buying her First Treasury of Knitting Stitches) She gave me the courage to design my own knits. Get this book before it goes out of print again!

The Knitwit's Bible!
Barbara Walker first turned me on to knitting in her invaluable primer for beginners, "America's Knitting Book", now sadly out of print. Once you get past casting on and the basic knit and purl stitches, it's fun to start designing your own projects, and the "Treasury" makes this simple. It was the "Treasury" that turned me into a dyed-in-the-wool "knitwit". It's mind-blowing to think that so many hundreds of patterns are varieties of just two fundamental stitches, the knit stitch and the purl stitch. Let your imagination loose; there's no limit on what you can make. The "Treasury" is organized into basic pattern groups, starting with simple knit-purl combinations, and advancing through ribbing, color-change patterns, slip stitch, twist stitch, and many more, all the way through lace and cable stitch patterns. The directions are very clear and concise, and the photographs are excellent. Walker doesn't give instructions for making different garments in this book, but she does explain how the patterns can be adapted to making just about anything.

One of the best (for this reviewer) chapters was the one on cable stitch knitting; here Walker tells how to design and make your own original fisherman's sweater, using any number of different cable stitch patterns. It sounded like so much fun that I decided to try it, and it came out so great that I promptly made another one, this time casting on from top to bottom and knitting the sweater sideways, so all the cables run horizontal. Talk about an original! This book really lets your creative genius loose. Use it, enjoy it, and have a lot of fun.

3000 Degrees: The True Story of a Deadly Fire and the Men Who Fought It
Published in Audio Cassette by Listen & Live Audio (01 March, 2002)
Authors: Sean Flynn, Christopher Walker, and Scan Flynn
Average review score:

3000 Degrees
This book was one of the most riveting of any fire related books,I have ever read. The attention to detail ,from the initial alarm, until the conclusion of the incident, was flawless. If Sean Flynn were not familiar with the workings of a city fire department, then he took the time to become more knowledgeable than most civilians could ever hope to. He not only covered the technical aspects of the fire, but the human side as well. This book easily falls among the ranks as those written by other noted authors as Dennis Smith, and Leo Stapleton.

If You Burn Me I Will Climb To Heaven on the Flames
The title at the beginning of these comments is from St. Florian, and was on a medal recovered from the spot where one of the men fighting this fire died. The medal should not have survived, silver melts at 1,600 degrees, a body is incinerated at 1,800 degrees, and the heat in the building had reached 3,000 degrees.

I came to read this book from a rather unusual direction. Worth Magazine just did a profile of the most generous Americans, not necessarily those who gave the most money, but as a percentage of what they have, their reasons, and other intangibles beside the traditional yardstick of amount only. Actor/comedian and member of this very special group is Dennis Leary. Of the 6 men who died in this fire, one was his cousin and another was a childhood friend. His foundation has raised $2 million for firefighters in Worcester MA and NYC. His organization was cutting checks 3 months after September 11th in NYC; he has no use for bean counters.

Sean Flynn's book, "3000 Degrees", is easily one of the most powerful books I have read in 2002, it is the first of many books I will now read on Firemen, and others who put themselves in lethal harm's way, for the rest of us. As I read this book, I asked the same question I often ask when men and women put the lives of others before their own, not for a single moment, but every day, for years and often for decades. Some members of a team are the rescue members, and these men enter the building without any fire fighting equipment, like hoses, to protect themselves. They go in looking for victims and are unprotected against flame and other lethalities except by their experience and luck. They are in a burning building looking for you and me before the houses may even be turned on.

Firemen are not drafted; they are not military, although some served prior to becoming Firefighters. The serve their own communities, but adjacent ones when needed, and generally walk in to situations that may kill them to save people they do not know, or to be sure a building is empty of persons. The latter was the case on December 3, 1999. Six men died in a building that was boarded up, and devoid of human life. It had many lives within it for several hours, and then 6 lives became the only bodies that the building would ever contain.

Tim Jackson, Joe McGuirk, Paul Brotherton, Jay Lyons, Tom Spencer, and Jerry Lucey died, because as one person involved in the fire wondered, that 6 of his friends had died because, "two misfits were too scared to dial 911". These misfits not only started the fire, accidentally, they did not report it, but because it is not against the law to fail to report a fire in Massachusetts, even if you started it, neither person was convicted of anything.

Now Julie and Tom continue to live their lives which up until the night they started this fire were notable only for the similarities they shared. They were the personification of life's losers, living illegally, living in filth, living any way they chose as long as it required nothing from them, no effort. And if that meant going to jail, breaking the law, and living in their own filth like no animal would do, that was what they did.

They killed these 6 men by their actions, even if you call their act one of omission as opposed to commission, the men are dead, and Julie and Tom started the fire, Julie and Tom ran, and Julie and Tom did not bother to let anyone know the building they illegally were squatting in was empty. That their illegal residence was barely worth the water to contain the blaze, much less the lives of 6 men, a host of new widows, and a large number of now fatherless children, never occurred to Julie and Tom.

They went to Media Play and listened to music while the fire spread, books were out for Tom, he's illiterate. And while the candle falling over and causing the fire was called an accident, it probably would not have fallen if Tom did not try to force himself on Julie. Tom was in the mood, Julie was not, so 6 men died.

The men who fought this fire and died and those who fought it and lived are all remarkable people. They are people that few of us can measure up to. Are you willing to take a job where you place your life at risk every day, not for fame, or money, or even job security? I don't think you are; I'm not.

Firemen are willing to make the sacrifice, so are Policemen and women. So the next time you are tempted to park in front of a hydrant, don't, next time you get nailed for speeding, take the ticket, call the officer sir or mam, and act like an adult. Don't whine because your radar/laser detector did not allow you to get away with speeding. Want to speed, pay the ticket; don't blame the officer who stops you.

30,000 Firefighters from all over the world came to Worcester to pay their respects to these men and the families that were left behind. So the next time you pass a Firehouse, think about the people in side, you probably don't know them, and they don't know you. Would you die for them, they are prepared to die for you, every minute of every day.

I Watched This Fire From My Back Deck... A POWERFUL BOOK!!
Like many of Worcester, MA, I watched this fire and was overwhelmed by its power. The loss of life was without equal. This recounting is a great tribute to the Fire Department and all the men present at this fire. Many of us listened to the events unfold on scanners; others watched as the flames colored the night sky. Sean Flynn tells all the details and the humanity of these life shattering event. No matter where you live, this book is a must read to understand what firemen and women do everyday. As well as to see their lives through their family and friends.

Malicious Intent: A Hollywood Fable
Published in Hardcover by Bancroft Press (October, 1999)
Author: Mike Walker
Average review score:

WOW!
Never has a book so enthralled me as this one. I just couldn't put it down. I love to read, but I must say this is the best book I have read in a long time. Move over Stephen King. There's a new guy in town! I've been an avid reader of the National Enquirer for many years, but I know Mike Walker's greatest achievement is this book. I have never gotten so caught up in a character. Charmain Burns makes you fall in love with her, feel sorry for her, and hate her, plus she makes you laugh and cry. The ending of the book was to die for! And where did he come up with this character Randak 2000? Awesome! If Mike Walker writes any more novels, this is one fan who'll be first to buy and read it.

Great read !!!
I have always enjoyed Mike Walker's column in the National Enquirer. But to read his book, it's as if glitzy Hollywood has come to life in his novel. I really enjoyed the characters of Charmaine and Steve Bellini. This book is great and the twists and turn throughout it kept me from putting this book down. Mike Walker, I hope there is a sequel!!

Malicious Intent
Like the "Godfather," this is one of those rare booksthat you just can't put down. It's laugh-out-loud funny,fast-paced, and sex-x-x-y. Just when you thought that Hollywood glitzhas worn thin the proverbial carpet, here's a juicy read that's as new and riviting and outrageous as its author - who's on the National Enquirer TV show and on Howard Stern. It's no wonder Howard loves this guy. He's got all this inside scandal. And if you read between the lines, you'll recognize who these celebrities are. Walker does an end run past the stars and Hollywood powerbrokers who would otherwise sic their lawyers on him to shut him up -or their henchmen to bust his kneecaps. Hollywood is bound to make a movie of this, but no film can get inside the heads of these intriguing characters the way this book does. You want a great read? This book is for you.

The Little House Cookbook : Frontier Foods from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Classic Stories
Published in Paperback by HarperTrophy (October, 1995)
Authors: Barbara M. Walker and Garth Williams
Average review score:

Loved this book!
I hope that you will be as impressed with this book as I was. I was taken away with all of the background information on the preparing, cooking, and serving of food in this book. It has some very good recipes in this, as well as great documentation on the life during the time where Laura grew up. The book is also well illustrated. This has been the most impressive cookbook for children that I have seen to date in terms of extra information that goes with the cookbook. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a book for their favorite Little House on the Prarie fan. This book would also be excellent for a scout troup wanting to do something a little historical. A definate must!

Excellent, informative cookbook!
Excellent book for any fan of the Little House on the Prairie series, or of pioneer history. Capture a taste of the old days making frontier foods that have been adapted for modern kitchens. Very interesting historical information regarding the recipes, cooking techniques, etc. Educational and fun!

FABULOUS!!!!
I've been a Laura Ingalls Wilder fan for practically my whole life and am now delighted to be reading the whole series aloud to my young daughter who loves the books as much as I. My friend told me about this cookbook and we purchased it - it is WONDERFUL!

I read the whole thing cover to cover - it is just fascinating. The author writes in a very readable, extremely interesting style. I love having all the recipes for the meals mentioned throughout the Little House books and I *love* reading the history included in this cookbook. It adds such depth and perspective to our readings of the LIW books. [This book is as much a history text as it is a cookbook - and it does great justice to both genres!]

My daughter and I have made several of the recipes from the book so far and they have all been delicious, if not exactly health conscious. :) I haven't been able to bring myself to buy Lard, but we have delighted in making some of the same foods Laura ate. My daughter is learning a HUGE amount about history through these experiences.

Buying this book is the best money I've spent in years!

New Light
Born Twice attention shoppers is a very vivid description of one mans struggle to find a new light in
his life, which he finds in Jesus. I found it a moving struggle
of one mans ordeal to find himself. The many Journeys that he takes from a middleclass construction worker to a life of crime
which in the end results in prison, where a self dicovery of
himself which leds him into a New Light, Which he now shares with all he comes in contact with today. Born Twice attention shoppers is a must read book.

Born Twice: Attention K-Mart Shoppers
I thought this book was wonderful. i felt as if the book was truly a dipliction of life without all the revision. I think that the writer was excellent, and i will be looking foward to reading his next book. I recently watched the video, in whicch they described criminal activity on the street as nothing but a series of smiles and cries, I feel that not only is this a metaphor for the criminal lifestyle, but also everyday life. I think that this author has seen his share of cries now he waits the other end of the spectrum. Which he has now found in God. This has trully made him, a better person. And good things come to good people.

ONE MANS CHANGE
BORN TWICE IS A CHILLING STORY OF ONE MANS ABILITY TO OVER COME THE CRIMINAL WORLD IN HIS LIFE. HIS VENGANCE THAT HE TAKES OUT ON HIS WIFE WHEN HE BELIEVES SHE IS HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH A TOWN COP. THE PAIN IT CAUSES TO ALL IN HIS FAMILY, HIS COMING TO FIND CHRIST IN THE MOST STRANGEST PLACE OF ALL. WHICH LEADS HIM TO BECOME A REVERAND WITH A SMALL MINISTRY. AND A FAMILY WHOS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE STANDS BESIDES HIM BORN TWICE,HAS MOVED ME TO TEARS.AS IT WILL YOU.
